“towards reducing, refinement or replacement of animal use in teaching, testing and biomedical research and environmental (3Rs)” “towards the reduction, refinement or replacement of the use of animals in research, education and testing (3Rs)”
Objectives
The objectives of the Working Group for alternative methods (GTEMA) its:
- Encourage cooperation and coordination of scientific activities contributing to the development of new experimental methods, so in vivo as in vitro, leading to (the three Rs): reduce the number of animals used, refine techniques that reduce stress and suffering of these, o a replace the use of animals.
- Encourage the participation of Spanish researchers in prevalidation or validation programs test.
- Promote regulatory acceptance of the same.
Source GTEMA
With growing interest in alternative, and in 1992 is proposed to the AET JD the possibility of creating a working group, Several meetings have occurred since then. El interesante ICLAS/CSIC Workshop on Complementary Methods, greatly boosted the formal establishment of the same.
Meetings
The GTEMA has organized or participated actively in the following meetings:
- ICLAS/CSIC Working Group on Complementary Methods, Talavera de la Reina, 1995.
- GTEMA Meeting, Spanish Congress of Toxicology XI, Tenerife, 1995.
- Sessions on Alternative Methods, 3 Iberoamerican Congress of Toxicology- Spanish Congress of Toxicology XI, Tenerife, 1995.
- Workshop on Using in vitro cell models for the Investigation of Molecular Mechanisms of Toxicity, EUROTOX-96, Alicante, 1996.
- Seminar Advances in Application of in Vitro Alternative Methods of Drug Evaluation, Cosmetics and Chemicals, SmithKline Beecham, Tres Cantos, 1997.

Other activities undertaken by the highlight GTEMA:
- Publication: “ICLAS/CSIC Working Group on Complementary Methods”, de la Peña E, Scythe, Barrueco C, Repetto G, Mencius Gonzalez F, Part P Garcia, Madrid, 1995.
- Aid for research: Encouraging and acting as a link in the search for partners to carry out coordinated research projects related to alternative.
- Dissemination of information : on activities in the Journal of Toxicology, official organ of the AET, Alternatives to Laboratory Animals (SKIP), Eurotox Newsletter, Toxicology and Ecotoxicology News, Newsletter of the SECAL, and listservs.
- Circular GTEMA: prepare 3-4 number / year from 1995, which are distributed to all members of the TEP (400).
